In my opinion, do Sim first just to get the feel of what does what if it's your first time, then when you go to the field, get a good altitude and hope for the best. Good luck
Agree, I used the sim for tricks that weren’t intuitive for me like inverted orbits and reverse stuff. But sooner or later you just gotta commit and try it.Make sure you pick big obstacles and empty spaces (if possible for the trick)
I ignored the advice to learn on a sim first and went straight to flying, but my first quad was a whoop so the risk was pretty small. That’s typically what I do tho—before I try anything new and super fancy on a build that I’d rather not crash I go out and practice a little with a 75mm whoop. I converted my mob6 25000kv to 75mm and use that as my every day house/yard flyer
im really just learning the basics at this point. I learned how to fly on a sim but honestly it doesnt feel enough like actually flying for me to say that makes me comfortable taking it real world so I just go with altitude and pray. Ive also built 3 quads at this point and love tinkering so im with the attitude if it breaks ill fix it. tho maybe we should be more careful with the chip shortage 😯
I personally have NEVER used a sim. I just try anything new on my basher first. If it's not a option I just get as much safe altitude as possible and hope for the best lmao. If it's a proximity move I just close my eyes and pray😂. Jk seriously though I just send it at this point I'm like if I break something I can fix it so no real worries. If the sim is a option for you use it. Dont be me, don't break stuff needlessly!!
In the main I just go higher, not like botgrinder higher, I mean altitude higher, try it there and then slowly come lower and lower
I'll get the general feel of the stick movements down in the sim, then crash irl.

I would say altitude. Get that muscle memory down giving you plenty of drop time to recover.

I have a ooooold beater that I could care less if I slammed into a wall full speed or dove in the ocean.
